Supporting education for girls through the Malala Fund

Friday, Sep 11, 2015 Cheryl Ball

Over the last several months, I’ve had a couple opportunities to learn about the Malala Fund and the upcoming film release, “He Named Me Malala.” Co-founded by Malala Yousafzai and her father, the fund works to secure girls’ rights to a minimum of 12 years of quality education, particularly in the global south. The goal is to help girls achieve their potential and positively impact their local communities for the rest of their lives. Below are a few stats on why this is such important work.

An Open Letter of Thanks to Women Leaders

Wednesday, May 2, 2012 Kelly Fletcher

Last week we attended an event called "Women, Power & Leadership." Held at the University of Tennessee's Baker Center for Public Policy, the event was a panel discussion and gathering of minds of some of our area's power female movers and shakers, as well as some national people of interest, including former New Jersey Governor and EPA director Christine Todd Whitman. Open to women only, the event sold out and we'd be willing to bet there are other ladies who didn't get to attend. This post is a summary of what was said, as well as an open letter of thanks to these amazing women who shared insight, wisdom and advice gleaned from their prestigious careers.

She's SO Empowered: Lauren Bush Lauren

As a public relations agency specialized in marketing to women, empowered females are on our radar. This is why Lauren Bush caught our eye. It's hard to imagine having more of a well-known surname than Bush, but Lauren managed to tack on another famous initial to her monogram when she married the son of fashion mogul Ralph Lauren in 2011, becoming Lauren Lauren. As the niece of former President George W. Bush, she's had plenty of opportunities to rest on her family laurels, but she certainly hasn't.

There's a new documentary about the representation of women in the media and it's really gotten people talking. The film, MissRepresentation, premiered on Oprah's OWN Network last night and attempts to shed some light on how the mainstream media portrays women and girls. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom (pictured below with Gloria Steinem, Daphne Zuniga and Geena Davis), the film provides an up-close look at how women in positions of power are scrutinized by members of the media in ways that their male counterparts are not.
