How Public Relations is Like The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games seems to be all anyone is talking about right now, with the film version of the New York Times bestselling book recently released in theaters. The story could serve as an allegory for the world of public relations with practitioners battling it out in the Arena, I mean business world. Public relations practitioner does continue to be ranked very high on the list of the most stressful jobs to have.

Diane Schwartz wrote about this very thing recently at the PRNews blog. She mentions the pr professional's "daily battle to preserve reputation, break though the clutter, launch or wrap up a campaign, boost employee morale, drive more sales and measure your success (and failures)."

Schwartz goes on to say that "everyday you are playing a game of survival, dealing with decisions and authorities beyond your control. You form alliances and pick your battles. You might get stabbed in the back; you might be rescued by an unlikely competitor. You might even find yourself handing over your last piece of proverbial bread to your teammate."

We agree with Schwartz' statement that "your best weapon is your intelligence, but a little perspiration doesn’t hurt."

The Hunger Games had millions of viewers on its opening weekend, with the selling point that it offers something for everyone. We wonder if everyone who saw it related to that part of the story in some way. Can you compare the challenges of your daily life or your professional field to The Hunger Games? We value your thoughts!
