If you’re not doing social media for your company, you are missing out on an important tool for your business. Social media has been around in force for nearly a decade now, so if you’re still on the fence about joining the social game, I’ve got bad news for you—you were behind the times three years ago. In case you still need convincing, here are three reasons to dive into the world of social media.

1. To legitimize your business

Ten years ago, a website began transitioning from a luxury to a necessity. Without one, your business might as well not exist. Now, we’re seeing a similar shift with social media. Your business just doesn’t seem as legitimate if it doesn’t have a presence on social media. In fact, it’s not uncommon for businesses have Facebook and Twitter pages before they even establish a website, and some are even eschewing a website in favor of a Facebook page (though that’s not usually advisable).

2. To interact with customers

Whether it’s handling customer service complaints, or just sharing news about your company, social media gives you a platform to listen, react and respond to customers. You can address their issues, get their feedback, and inform them about your business all while controlling the message.

3. To join the conversation

Chances are that your competitors already have a presence on social media and also that people are talking about your company. Social media gives you an outlet to be a part of the conversation about your brand instead of letting your unsatisfied customers and competitors steer the discussion.

There are of course many other reasons for your business to join the social media landscape, and you want to avoid the mistakes businesses make on social media, but if you aren’t on social yet, you’re missing out on an easy opportunity to market your company.
